Ireland – Spain flights facing disruption

Flights between Ireland and Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canaries are facing disruption because of a general strike in Spain due to take place tomorrow.

Aer Lingus has warned that the strike could significantly disrupt flights to and from Ireland.

The carrier says it is seeking clarity, from the Spanish authorities, on which flights they will have the ability to operate.

Kenya suffers from holiday sales slump

Ongoing threat from piracy and civil unrest have resulted in bookings of holidays to Kenya falling by nearly 60 per cent according to a report by the British tour operator Hayes & Jarvis.

At least six people were killed in Nairobi earlier this month in a series of explosions and the Department of Foriegn Affairs currently advises against all but essential travel to parts of the country within 60km of the border with Somalia, due to several recent kidnappings.

Surfing dog promotes Isle of Wight

A new publicity initiative for the Isle of Wight has taken an unusual approach – by making man’s best friend the focus of the campaign.

A 24-page guide, entitled ‘Pawprint’ and commissioned by Wightlink, the ferry operator, features a cast of “dog reporters” designed to promote the area as a canine-friendly destination.

Publicists describe the guide as “written by Isle of Wight dogs and their humans to spell out all the things that make the island a great place for dogs to visit on holiday with their families.”

Washington D.C.’s cherry blossoms turn 100

This year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival marks 100 years since 3,20 trees arrived in Washington as a gift from Japan.

Aside from an incident in 1941 when four of the trees were chopped down in retaliation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, it’s been a century-long love affair ever since.

American casino mogul Sheldon Adelson wants to build a $22 billion gambling playground in either Barcelona or Madrid but he has some demands; namely that the chosen city relaxes their smoking laws and caps on building height.

Madrid and Barcelona are both vying to woo Adelson for his investment, which will also include the construction of shopping centres, bars and restaurants. The two sites being eyed in Madrid each cover an area equivalent to 1,000 football fields.

Tourism in Canary Islands “under threat” from oil drilling
