new york

Stepping off Madison Avenue into the calm of the Library Hotel lobby you immediately get that happy glow not always felt when you first enter the hotel you have chosen for your city break – that unconscious sigh of relief that tells you that you have chosen the right place. We had walked through mid town Manhattan to get there and the cool calm atmosphere created by Nick the front office manager and his team immediately told us we were in the right place.

The Library is a very special boutique hotel right in the centre of mid town (Madison and 41st Street) very close to New York City Library and Bryant Park which plays host to some of the hottest shows of fashion week. This hotel is designed for Manhattan travelers with a passion for culture and an appetite for life. Each of the ten guestroom floors at the Library Hotel  is dedicated to one of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System: Social Sciences, Literature, Languages, History, Math & Science, General Knowledge, Technology, Philosophy, The Arts and Religion. In turn each of the 60 rooms are furnished with a unique collection of books and art exploring a distinct topic within each category. We are reliably informed that the Erotica room on the Literature floor is the most requested room in the place.

Outside your room this hotel continues to entertain with the 2nd floor lobby offering guests a 24 hour tea, coffee, cookies and refreshment service and a nightly wine and cheese reception between five and eight o’clock. Up on the 14th floor the cool bar / lounge stretches out on to a terrace with spectacular views of mid town Manhattan. The bar is popular with a local after work crowd from the agencies of nearby Madison Avenue. Very “Mad Men”. With a poetry garden, a writers den and a selection of DVDs comprising the top 100 films of the 20th Century The Library provides a cool penthouse feel right in the middle of mid town.

Whether it’s your first trip or you’re a regular visitor to the greatest city on earth, you’re guaranteed to have an amazing experience in New York City. The only downside is that the plethora of amazing things to do in New York can sometimes be overwhelming. Let us steer you in the right direction with the inside story on our perfect weekend in NYC.

Arriving after a long flight you’ll want some tasty and nourishing food in a quintessential New York location. Head for David Chang’s Momofuku Noodle Bar in the East Village for some warming kimchi stew or their famous ramen with pork belly and poached egg. Check out the local bars including Death & Company on East 6th Street whose cocktails like the Sweet Hereafter will send you smiling to your deserved sleep.

Waking up bright and early take in stunning New York skyline views right from your bed at the Standard Highline, the uberhip Meatpacking district hotel. The Standard’s rooms are compact but well designed, and floor to ceiling windows mean it feels as though the city is in your room. If you need a little privacy draw the opaque drapes and order breakfast in bed from the delicious room service menu.

The location of the Standard couldn’t be better with the Highline right beneath you, providing a beautiful mile and a half walk along the old rail line, planted with wild grasses and flowers. Once you reach 14th street make a right and hit the Union Square Greenmarket to peruse locally grown fruits and veggies and other fresh goodness. Get a takeaway fresh soup and salad and sit watching the squirrels in the green oasis of Union Square.

When you’ve had enough of nature and want to get back to the city head uptown to the shops on 5th avenue, or for the more culturally inclined while away a few hours in MoMA, whose unparalleled art collection revolves regularly ensuring there’s always new masterworks to view. Once sated with art or shopping head for the nearby Peninsula Hotel for a drink on their terrace with old-school Manhattan views over St Patrick’s cathedral and midtown.

Cab it back to the Standard Highline to freshen up for the night. We suggest nearby eats at Colicchio & Sons and the meatpacking area is suffused with eateries and low and high dives to while away your evening. At the end of the night take a final nightcap at the Top of the Standard. The bar is an intriguing mix of futuristic skyline vistas and old world booths and cocktails. The cool crowd and cutting edge DJs keep the party going and the vibe is young and fun.

Next morning take in brunch at the always wonderful Balthazar on Spring St followed by a browse through the excellent McNally Jackson bookstore. Then get your fix of gifts and people watching amongst the  galleries and boutiques of nearby Soho.

Oh, and don’t be too sad as you hail your final cab for the airport and home. It’s New York. You’ll be back.
